could they make a solemn occasion like “Veterans Day” into a SALE at Macy’s. Maybe I’ve forgotten, but I don’t recall having “Remembrance Day” sales in Canada? It just doesn’t seem right. Am I wrong?

I do agree with you that Remembrance Day and Veteran's day should be solemn occasions and not an excuse for yet another sale. That's awful!
I went to my sons' school for the Remembrance Day service and am glad to see they are working hard to keep the memory alive with the kids. They need to know about the sacrifices that were made and how war isn't some kind of kid's game.
