Little Green Island in the Big Blue Sea–Day 6
Monday, January 31, 2005
For the last stretch of our holiday we spent some time touring the natural wonders of the island. Our first stop was Waimea Canyon, a ten mile gorge, nicknamed “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific” by Mark Twain. I have yet to see the (Arizona) Grand Canyon so I cannot compare. Although, I can say the Kaua’i version was a jaw-dropping sight. This was our second attempt to see the canyon, unfortunately the view is often obliterated by dense fog.
Our second stop was Glass Beach. A curious place near an old dump and an industrial park. I know it doesn’t sound so pretty, but one must keep an open mind. The beach consists of millions of pieces of broken glass that have been worn down by the pounding surf. The result: a sparkling carpet of assorted colors–totally cool! There were also bits that would only capture the imagination of a gearhead like my hubby—old engine parts! Ooooh!
Oooh purty!

Five Facts about those Crazy Roosters
- They are wild on many parts of the island.
- Many escaped incarceration during Hurricane ‘Iniki (1992)
- They have proliferated ever since.
- They like to crow all day long
- They are really dumb!
