The California Snow Rush

Sometimes my ideas just don’t pan out like the perfect images in my head.
Photo: Robert Gauthier Los Angeles Times. So lovely.
All the rain and cool temperatures we’ve been having in the valley can only mean one thing: soft, white, fluffy stuff in the hills. Lured by this charming photo featured on the cover on yesterday’s LA Times, I thought it would be a great idea to drive up today and have a look. I could even wear my Lands End outdoor gear and feel just like a real Canadian should—cold.
The reality of the situation could not have been more pitiful. After several attempts at different routes up the San Gabriel Mountains, we were greeted with road closures and loads of traffic. Harumph. I hate it when other people steal my idea. When we did manage to get far up enough to see some actual clumps of snow, the place was jam-packed with snow-deprived families hopefully carrying sleds and toboggans. Much to our bewilderment, some people were even bringing snow back to their cars.
I’d ridicule people for going to such lengths to see plain old snow, but . . . we were right there with them.
