New Yoga Teacher Blues Part I: Teaching Yoga is Tiring
Saturday, March 15, 2008
Andrew is away in Spain this week and I’m just taking it rather easy this weekend. As usual there was a dizzying array of activities, but I chose to poke around the neighbourhood and apartment. It was a week of “filling in” and I’m surprisingly tired. I taught two special needs yoga classes because the regular teacher’s dog died. The special needs people are sweet but real cranky when their regular teacher doesn’t show up. It’s not unusual for them to turn around and leave in a huff, but what’s worse is when they decide to stay and take the class in a huff. Which is precisely what happened on Friday. After more than an hour of complimenting and encouraging the-student-in-a-huff I was a rewarded with a smile and approval. It’s always nice to receive hard won approval especially if you’re new at what you’re doing, but still it wore me out. Makes me wonder how teachers do it week after week. Although like everything else I suppose it gets better with experience.
