Book Recommendation: Worth Every Penny
Thursday, September 25, 2008
Over the years I’ve spent good deal of money buying computer how-to books for the sole purpose, it seems, to collect dust on the shelf. Oh sure they may be thumbed once or twice in a pinch and the odd book does get used on a regular basis, but most of them have ended up in the Sally Ann* bag. The problem with most computer manuals is that they are boring as dirt and as soon as I start to read one I feel a great urge to have a nap. I still continue to buy computer books just in case things will be different “this time”.
Recently I bought Creating Web Sites: The Missing Manual with no expectations aside from a cure for insomnia and a thinner wallet. To my surprise the manual is not boring at all and some parts are quite funny. The writing is very clear and just folksy enough to keep me interested. I’m not sure if all the titles are as good as this particular book, but the next time I’m looking to throw away money I’m going to buy from the Missing Manual series.
